Bike Fitting at Gran Fondo

Bikefitting.com
At Gran Fondo we have made the investment in a variety of tools to make sure that your next bike is perfectly fitted to you or to provide an analysis of you on your current bike to insure optimal performance and comfort. As a Merlin dealer, we have access to very sophisticated tools designed to aid in the Made-to-Measure customization process. The proprietary system, created by the Dutch company Bikefitting.com, the Merlin measuring wall, bike simulator and special software provide the perfect platform to calculate and test the proper fit for your bike. Concepts can be explored, new geometries evaluated, and the perfect frame and tube set can be better defined. Every aspect of your riding choices are factored into the proper fit examination. From crank arm length, to bar width and stem length, to saddle height, and even as far as to brand of shoes, pedals, etc; are added to the fit equation. The outcome is the matching of your new custom frame with the exact group of components to accomplish the perfect and complete fit.

Following our determination of frame sizes and geometries appropriate for you, we can simulate your custom frame on the bike simulator or put you on a bike from our extensive inventory for that all so important test ride. Size determined, compare titanium, carbon, aluminum and steel. You never have to order blindly – we need for you to know that you have found the ideal ride!

Should I fix up my present bike or buy a new one?

This time of the year one of the most frequently asked questions is "Should I put more money into upgrades for my current bike or should I buy a new one?" It is a good question and the answer can go either way. Let's explore the two options and see where you might weigh in.

The first thing to look at is your budget. Perhaps you just came into a large sum of money that's burning a hole in your pocket. If a budget is not an issue, in that case you might be able to buy a new bike AND fix up the old one. However, most people have a set amount they can spend. The best way to stretch your fixed budget is to let our staff know what you want to spend and what makes up your wish list of improvements. It helps us get what you want and it stretches your money further.

The second thing to consider is your present bike. What kind of condition is it in? How old is it? What was it worth when you bought it? If you bought a high end frame ($1000+) and the frame is still in good shape, but your drive train is worn out, maybe a new drive train, wheels, and carbon fiber fork would make the perfect upgrade. Steel, aluminum and carbon-fiber frames can be repainted at a cost of $250-$500. A new drive train can cost $500-$1,200. New wheels start at $300 and go up to $1,500. Always remember that new wheels can be used on your next bike, so they can be a good, long lasting investment.

If your present bike is ten years old or older, it is time to replace it. The upgrades you do will usually cost more than the bike is worth. You can get a great bike starting at $1,000. New bikes in the $1,500 range are as nice as $2,500 bikes that were made ten years ago. Spending between $2,000 to $3,000 today can get you an even greater quality bicycle that offers better performance, lighter weight, and greater comfort.

A new option to consider for bike buyers is http://www.preownedbikes.com. This is a service provided by American Bicycle Company. If you are interested in a new Merlin bicycle you can get a trade-in value for your present bike to use to your purchase. Simply find out what your present bike is worth on that website, download the appraisal form and bring it into Gran Fondo. We can confirm your appraisal and apply it to your new Merlin.
